Calgary Phone Directory

Calgary is a city located in the south part of the Province Alberta in Canada, in the region of hills near the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

It is the largest city from the Alberta province and the third largest city in Canada, and the Calgary phone directory only has more than 900,000 entries, not to mention the whole metropolitan area which has a little over 1 million people. Most of province Alberta’s population is concentrated in the area near Calgary, in fact in the area between Calgary and Edmonton, which is called the Calgary Edmonton Corridor, which has about two and a half million inhabitants. Due to the fact that Calgary lies near the Canadian Rocky Mountains it is an important tourism and ecotourism center with thousands of tourists visiting it each year.

An important tourist sector for Calgary is the winter sports, which became famous after the Olympic Winter Games held here in 1998.

Calgary used to be inhabited in ancient times by the pre Clovis people, whose presence was traced back 11,000 years ago. At the end of the 17th century, the first Europeans that came here found an indigenous tribe, the peigans, which lived here in a camp, planting and cropping vegetables and hunting buffalos.

A hundred years later the little settlement transformed into a police post that helped government keep the alcohol smuggling and the fur trade under control, and was named at first Fort Brisebois, and then changed its name to fort Calgary, after the Scottish Calgary from the Isle of Mull. In the last year of the 18th century Calgary was included in the route of the Canadian Pacific Railway, and this represented quite a boom in the local business and trade due to the fact that transportation became such an easy problem to manage. The cattle raisers were the first to benefit from it, since cattle raising and meat trade were the most developed activities in Calgary at that time.

The government decided to attract more people to live in this area, so the price of the land was settled at an extremely low level, you had to pay one cent per year for each acre of land, so it was almost free. The result was that people from all over the world rushed into Calgary, fact that is proved by the Calgary phone directory which includes names from a lot of foreign countries.

At the beginning of the 1900s, oil was found in the province of Alberta and by the 1950s it became the major industry sector from the area. This meant an economic boom for the city and doubled its population in the 30 years that followed; many of the new inhabitants were working in this new industrial sector.
