Italian Phone Directory

Italy is a state of Europe situated in the Italic Peninsula and which includes a few islands of the Mediterranean Sea, like Sicily and Sardinia. Italy has been the cradle of many European cultures, like the Romans, and to many modern cultural reforms, like the Renaissance. Italy has the longest and most important history from all the Mediterranean states, and Rome has been for a long time a bench mark for the culture of that time and the centre of politics in ancient Europe. After its decline, the Roman Empire and Rome too were devastated by the Germanic tribes and the Lombards adding german accents to the dialect of the region they passed through and some german nemes to the Italian phone directory.

Later they suffered again because of the two world wars: the First World War is a battle between two powerful alliances: Britain, France and Russia on one side, and on the other side Germany, Austria and Italy. This war led to the death of about half a million Italian soldiers and leave behind an economy in a very bad shape. These aspects lead Italy to fascism, just as it did in the case of Germany, which got out from the First World War with a lot of victims and a dying economy as well. Just as the Germans believed in Hitler and his ideology, the Italian people embraced Mussolini’s beliefs.

This is how he became a leader of the Black Collars; a military group formed by the representatives of the middle class, and was very famous and loved in Italy. This is how Mussolini became the youngest prime minister of Italy. The Collars become more and more powerful and violent, starting to resemble very much, the SS in Germany, and this is the beginning of the fascist domination in Italy. He orders the invasion of Ethiopia and proclaims Italy Empire. Mussolini is no longer in good relations with Britain and France because they have not reacted favorably to the invasion of Ethiopia, so he makes ally with Hitler’s Germany. Just as anyone named Hitler would never agree to be considered relatives with the dictator, the people called Mussolini whom you find in the Italian phone directory would never agree to be associated with the Italian fascist.

He called himself “il duce” and wanted to attract on his side the people who had fought in the First World War and were frustrated by its outcome. This was a strategy that resembled very much Hitler’s strategy, because the Italian fascist tried to copy each of the Austrian’s movements. Benito Mussolini’s end was even more tragic than Hitler’s; he was caught by some Italian communists, shot and the exposed in Milan.
