I was searching the other day for one of my old friend’s phone number in the london phone directory. Whereas a few years ago a phone directory was just a big book that helped you find a phone number and address, it is now a complex website that gives you information on property prices, aerial photos, maps and gives you access to a business directory.




After I found the phone number I was looking for I took a glimpse at the business directory. It is amazing how complex the information you receive is… they give you the address, the map, the website details, even a photo with the shop or the headquarters. And, that’s not all, you even get the company credit reports and the financial reports!



Many business owners use the london phone directory to advertise their business. It is guaranteed that at some point someone will look at your ad, because many people use this search engine to find the information they need. So you will find everything, from doctors’ and lawyers’ private office numbers to cleaning companies and party planning businesses.

In order to take advantage of this, the owners of the phone directories web sites started hiring sales agents and renting  the advertisement space, a very profitable business that brings a lot of cash into their pockets. At first business men were a little reluctant to this kind of publicity, but in time it proved to be very efficient and less expensive than radio ads, tv campaigns or even leaflets because everybody has a phone directory at home or needs to look something up in an online phone directory at some point.

The interesting part is that most of them contain detailed maps of the country and of all the cities, so you can use them to get directions, and even calculate the distance between two points, the fastest and the shortest way, it is kind of like using a gps. They point out the hotels, restaurants, theaters, cinemas, hospitals in every town, basically you get out of there any information you need. Some of them even have reviews and recommendations based on people that have been to those places.

I heard one of  my colleagues at work talking about wanting to hire a lawyer because he was having trouble with a heritage trial and didn’t know anyone who could help him with this matter. So he looked it up in the london phone directory. It is very simple, you can very easily manage the information and find out useful things that can help you in any situation. You can not always rely only on your personal experience and knowledge , sometimes you need to ask for “help”. And it saves you a lot of time and money, too.
