Nova Scotia is one of the Canada’s provinces that is located in the southern coast of Canada and is one of the smallest provinces, but one of the most densely populated, it has about 18 people per square kilometer. Most of the Nova   Scotia’s economic sectors are related to its natural resources, and the economy is still based on fishing, mining, forest exploitation, and agriculture, but they are now completed and even go hand in hand with tourism, technology and finance. This region is populated by the Micmac minority, nation who used to inhabit these places before the Europeans arrived, so now the Micmac names appear in the Nova Scotia phone directory together with the English and French names.

Unfortunately there are only about 20,000 Micmacs left compared to the 100,000 people estimated to have lived n this area before the European conquest. This ethnical minority is believed to be formed by the descendants of the first people that ever lived in this region about 10,000 years ago.

The first Europeans to ever visit Canada were the French, which established two colonies, one of military and strategic importance at Port  Royal, and one for the fishermen that moved here at Canso. About the same time England became interested in this territory too, and founded Nova Scotia as a response to the French invasion. This was the first establishment founded by the Scots, and its founding failed at first because there were a very small number of qualified workers who were willing to move to Canada.

James the 6th found a solution to this problem by proclaiming a new kind of gentry, the baronets, that obtained a title if they sent six skilled workers to Canada, with enough clothes and food for two years, so there were a lot of rich Scottish people with no noble title that got prepared to sacrifice six workers in order to get a title for them and their family. This is a good explanation for the large number of Scottish names from the Nova Scotia phone directory.

But this meant the beginning of the war with the French, and eventually the French were forced out of this land by the English. This victory was not meant to last long, because they returned Nova Scotia to the French after signing the Treaty of Suza. There was a very long struggle for this piece of land, and Nova Scotia was captured and then returned to the French several times, but eventually it became self governing and then became a province of today’s Canada. Its mixed French and English population is a proof of the times when the wars for its reign were fought, and so is the fact that the province has two official languages, English and French.
