Phone Directory Wales Uk

Wales is a country, part of the United Kingdom, with officially bilingual population. The two languages, English and Wels have equal status, although the Welsh speaking population comprises only 20 percent of the population.

Most Welsh people speak English, but bilingual signs and warnings are posted all over the country in order to fulfill with the country’s bilingual status. Phone directory of Wales, UK comprises both Welsh and English names and information.

There was a large concern of Welsh political groups that English language will take over completely and Welsh will soon disappear. The truth is that the majority of Wales’ inhabitants speak Welsh and only 21, 7 percent of the Welsh population can speak or read Welsh. There are however parts of the country in which the population can barely be considered coherent in English.

The Italian government, for example, provides funds for the Welsh immigrants of Italian ancestry in order for them to learn Welsh. The bilingual status of the country was regulated through the Welsh Language Act 1993 and the Government of Wales Act 1998 which stipulated that both languages were official and were to be regarded on a basis of equality. These acts were mostly released in order to reassure the leading political groups that Welsh will not disappear.

However, English is the language used by commoners and the phone directory of Wales, UK, although it comprises information and names of Welsh descent, it mostly constitutes an English written directory of information.

The modern name of Wales’ inhabitants is “Cymry” which is Welsh for “Land of the Cymry”. “Cymry’s” meaning is of “fellow countrymen” or “compatriots” and it draws its’’ roots from the Brythonic word “combrogi”. The English name “Wales” comes from a Germanic word, used in both singular and plural and having the meaning of “foreigner” or “stranger”.

Wales is mostly famous in the world for its ‘wonderful and picturesque landscape and for its’ traditional songs which have a specific and distinctive resonance. Although the Welsh language is nowadays rarely spoken, Welsh people preserve their traditions and every year the Eisteddfad is held, which is an annual celebration of Welsh culture. This celebration is held, as you may have guessed it, in Welsh.

The Welsh culture has drawn many tourists along the years. It cannot be compared to any other culture in the world as it has its ‘own specific holidays, music, customs and, of course, language. Welsh culture includes a lot of symbols, the most representative of the being the Welsh Dragon and the numerous List of Welsh Flags.

We cannot forget another Wales’ symbol for which the country is well-known and feared all over the world. It is the most popular sport in Wales: rugby. Wales has its’ traditional clubs which have won great victories over the years.
