Scotland Phone Directories

Scotland is a small country that is part of the United Kingdom. It lies in the northern part of Britain, and, besides the border with England is surrounded by water: North Sea to the east, the Atlantic Ocean to the north, the North Channel and the Irish Sea to the south and to the west. Besides the mainland, Scotland also includes more that seven hundred and ninety islands, most of them not habited at this time.

The first recorded history of Scotland begun when the Roman Empire invaded the territory of today’s United Kingdom, occupied today’s England and Wales and named it Britannia. It became a province of the Roman  Empire. Because they found here a large number of tribes which proved to be very good fighters, the Romans erected what is called today the Hadrian’s Wall, so they could control tribes from both sides of this construction. This became the northern border of the empire. The north part of the country was occupied by the Romans only forty years, whereas the south remained under the Romans’ occupation for about five centuries. This is where the Latin names appeared in the Scotland phone directories and this is the background of the Latin words from the English language.

During the medieval times the Scotts were called Picts, and they united to form a state as a natural reaction to the Roman occupation. They began developing their own culture and religion, though this little state was formed from the tribes that used to have no connection between them except for the fact that they were occupied by the Roman Empire.

Later, in the 15th century, began the government organization and the first towns appeared in this area. The Scot territory was populated by French and English knights and church men, which facilitated a melting of the culture and the language of the area, and now the people here spoke English and Gaelic language. There were a lot of French knights that were sent here and later established here, so the presence of French resembling words in the local dialect and the French names from the Scotland phone directories came from this period.

The Scots are very proud of their origin, and have struggled very hard to keep their identity as a distinct part of the Britain’s population. They have their own dialect, their own culture and their own individual customs that are different from the ones in the rest of the United Kingdom. The Scottish music is an important aspect of Scotland’s cultural heritage and it has influences both traditional and modern. They are famous worldwide for the traditional Great Highland Bagpipe and the kilt; this is the checked skirt present in the traditional costume of Scottish men.
