In need for the number of a country’s embassy, I tried to answer my question by searching it in Toronto phone directory. This seemed to be a problem because I searched a lot of web sites that offered information on people’s and businesses phone numbers, but I just couldn’t find such an official information anywhere. Then I came across toronto.ca/city_directory, where I found what I was looking for and much more. This web site is a full guide to living in the city of Toronto, whether you are here on holiday or you want to do business here. There is a city hall section which gives you access to any kind of information you need, from the city budget plan for this year to the council structure.




They guide you to the department which will most probably answer your question or solve your problem and then they help you make an appointment the following day with the person that is in charge with that. You have access to the Council, Committee and Board personnel and you can contact them by e-mail or call them if it is an emergency and if you want you have the chance to speak to them directly if you want to make your views and opinions public. This makes you feel kind of important and proud of the choice you made at the elections.



The business section is very complex and gives you advice on making business in Toronto, either on your own, or with the city hall. They have an incentive on business plans, a contest which awards the best business plan sent by the competitors. The main categories are energy saving, business taxes reduction, manufacturing and innovation. So basically you must come up with a good business plan which can be applied in that area. Another section explains haw you can get a business license, the documents that you need, and helps you to make business with the city hall, too.

The “living in Toronto” section makes you familiar with the city’s employment and social services, the utility bills and the building permits. The animal services announce you that you need a license in order to own a cat, a dog or any other kind of pet, because they are very interested in the animals’ health and welfare so they have to check you up and see if you meet the standard requirement in order to own a pet without affecting their safety.

The pet adoption section enables you to see an online catalogue with the dogs and cats that are available for adoption, and you can choose by color, gender or age your future pet. Very interesting, isn’t it?
