UK Phone Directory

Last week I was at work chatting in my lunch break with Paul, one of my colleagues and friends, a guy that just bought his own house and now is struggling to decorate it and move his furniture from the flat he used to live in. He bought the house after seeing about a dozen flats, and he was assured by his realtor that everything was in very good shape, it just needed fixing here and there, and that the low price (quite a bargain actually) was due to the fact that the former owners were forced to live town and they desperately needed the money.




Just like me, Paul has moved to London from a small town and is now working from early morning till late in the evening to pay for the fancy new house and car that he has purchased in order to stop feeling like a poor country boy lost in the big city. So, I asked him, how will he be able to repair the house having such a busy schedule? He told me that he was going to hire a plumber and a house painter that he looked up in the uk phone directories. What? How can you trust someone you find on an uk online phone directory and give him the keys to your house? I asked him to wait till the next day because one of my neighbors just had some workers at her flat and she seemed to be very pleased with their job.



So, knowing that this meant I would spoil my whole afternoon, I knocked at miss Moira Smith’s door, a lady in her 60s that buried her husband 10 years ago and was very eager to talk to anyone who would listen to her. I had to visit the entire flat, and after a two hour conversation I managed to leave with mr. Jack’s (the handyman) phone number and address.

Having arrived at home I remembered that Paul told me he looked the numbers up in the uk phone directories, and since I have never used it I decided to turn on my pc and see what it is all about. Imagine my surprise when, searching the plumber services list, I found mr. Jack’s full contact details on the first page. I even found miss Moira who was sometimes cooking food and sweets and was registered as a supplier for a small catering business.

And to my great astonishment, I was listed there, in the uk online phone directory with my full name, address and cell number. It is just like a phone book, but it is easier to use because you can modify your data, for example if you move away or change your telephone number you can modify the information right away so that anyone can find you.

I must admit that this changed my point of view. I am thinking of painting my house, so this is where I’ll search for someone to help me.
